PUBG often adds new mechanics to keep matches fresh and reward players who think ahead. One of those features is the Secret Basement system, which are hidden rooms that contain high-tier loot. To open them, you need a special item, namely the Secret Basement Key. It doesn’t spawn in fixed spots and isn’t easy to find every match. This guide breaks down what the key does, where to find it, and how to use it properly.

In PUBG, keys are special items used to unlock underground rooms known as Secret Basements. These hidden basements are available on certain maps like Erangel, Vikendi, Paramo, Taego, and Deston. Inside, you'll find high-tier loot such as level 3 gear, crate-exclusive weapons with full attachments, and rare healing items. The basements are sealed shut and can't be breached with explosives. Players must use a key to access them.
Unfortunately, the secret keys don't spawn in fixed spots. They are a part of the normal loot pool and can appear randomly across the map. You should check more carefully when looting buildings, searching inside rooms, checking tables or shelves, and even near entrances to secret basements. Sometimes, keys also spawn inside supply crates or care packages. Some locations noted to have high key drop rates include Buxley, Assembly, and Arena on the Deston map, or Pochinki, Military Base, and Georgopol if you're playing on Erangel.
Once you have the key, the next step is to find the nearest secret basement. You can recognize these hidden spaces by a wooden barrier marked with a red X. Destroy the barrier using a grenade to reveal the locked metal door. Approach the door while holding the key, and interact to unlock it. The key will be consumed upon use. Inside, you’ll find high-tier loot. Make sure to loot quickly and stay alert because enemies may have heard the noise and could be waiting outside to ambush you.
The key unlocks metal doors in secret rooms, accessed after breaking wooden barriers marked with a red “X.” Locations vary by map, often near hot drops.
Use it on metal doors in secret rooms on Erangel (15 rooms), Taego (15 rooms), Deston, Paramo, or Vikendi. Break the wooden entrance first, then unlock the door.
Expect Level 3 armor, airdrop weapons (AWM, Groza), medkits, adrenaline syringes, and attachments. Loot is random but typically high-quality.
Looting a key or not depends on your playstyle. If you’re an aggressive player who thrives in high-risk situations, secret basements offer the kind of high-tier loot that can turn the match in your favor. For players with sharp aim, quick decisions, and good map sense, the key is absolutely worth pursuing. But if you prefer to play it safe, sometimes holding onto the key and focusing on survival might be the smarter call.
