Learn how to make a game on Roblox with our step-by-step guide. Discover how to build your first game with Roblox Studio without complicated coding.
Roblox is one of the largest online gaming platforms in the world today, known for its vast user-generated content. Anyone can develop their own virtual world, from simple ideas to complex games through Roblox Studio. What makes it even more special is that creators can earn money from their games through the Robux currency system of the platform, turning their passion into real income. So, how do you get started? This guide will walk you through each step to create your first game on Roblox.
Games on Roblox are created by using Roblox Studio. This tool allows users to build game environments with drag-and-drop features, while also providing programming capabilities through Lua for more advanced interactions. Even beginners with no coding skills can start creating games and increase the complexity as they learn.
This tutorial will help you get familiar with Roblox Studio. You will practice creating basic elements such as blocks and jump pads, and learn how to change their colors, move, rotate, and resize them. Once you’ve mastered these basic skills, you’ll find it easier to develop creative ideas and gradually turn them into a complete game.
A simple game genre you can try at the beginning is Obby. It’s an ideal choice for practicing map design and getting used to how different mechanics work in Roblox Studio before moving on to more complex projects. Follow these steps to create an obby game.
Download and launch Roblox Studio.
Choose template.
Explore the workspace.
Add new parts
Anchor, place, and shape your part
Customize the color and material.
Add interactive elements.
Test the game.
Save the project.
The first step is to download Roblox Studio here. Launch it and sign into your Roblox account. Create a new account if you don’t have one.
Note that Roblox Studio is currently not available on mobile devices and is only accessible via PC or Mac for game creation.
Once Roblox Studio is open, go to the “New” tab and you will see a list of templates under “All Templates”. Find and select the Baseplate template.
After selecting the template, Roblox Studio will open the game creation interface. This is where you should take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the main areas such as:
3D Viewport: The central area where you build and view your game.
Explorer Panel: Shows all game objects in a structured hierarchy.
Properties Panel: Lets you change properties like size, color, name, material, and position of selected objects.
Toolbox: Offers a library of models, assets, and scripts.
Toolbar: Includes tools for moving, scaling, rotating, and anchoring parts.
To insert a new part, go to the Home tab and click Part. A gray block will appear in the game world.
To change the color of parts, click on the specific part, go to the Home tab, then select your preferred color from the Color dropdown.
To change material, open the Properties panel, and look for “Material” and “BrickColor.” This lets you add textures like wood, metal, or neon for more visual interest.
You can make parts move or add game logic using Lua scripting:
Right-click a part in the Explorer.
Select Insert Object > Script.
Add a basic script to make platforms move or spin.
If you’re not ready to script, you can use plugins or insert pre-made scripts from the Toolbox.
After adding obstacles and custom elements, test your game by clicking the Play button in the top toolbar. You’ll enter the game world and can try everything in real time. This helps you identify any issues with positioning, movement, or logic.
To save your Roblox game, go to File at the top window and choose Save to File.
When you’re ready to share your game with others, you’ll need to make it public on Roblox. First, click File in the top menu and choose Publish to Roblox. A pop-up menu will appear where you can enter your game’s name and description. Once you're finished, simply click the blue “Create” button to complete the process. Now, anyone on Roblox can find and play your game.
Creating and publishing a game on Roblox is completely free. You don’t need to pay anything to use Roblox Studio. Anyone with a Roblox account can start building games right away. While you can choose to spend Robux on add-ons or to promote your game, the basic tools to create, test, and publish a game are available at no cost.
Absolutely. Roblox Studio is built to be beginner-friendly, with drag-and-drop tools and ready-made assets. Even kids can start designing simple games within minutes.
With more complex games like Adopt Me, Grow a Garden, or multiplayer experiences, users will need to learn scripting and advance design skills.
Creating a game on Roblox is accessible, fun, and completely free. Whether you're a beginner or a future developer, the tools and community support make it easy to turn your imagination into a playable experience. Start simple, explore your creativity, and build the next big Roblox hit.
